We Slept in a Cave
Created 11/11/10
The last weekend of October we traveled to Farmington (near NW corner
of NM) to sleep in a cave. Well, not just any cave, but Kokopelli's
Cave!
The day started a little late due to Eleni's getting home at 10:00 from
Chaplaining, and John not being ready due to Fire Department activity
the night before. We took the "scenic" route to Cuba/550 by way of Road
126. Too bad it was not the roughest drive of the weekend.

On the way to the cave, we stopped for a Cattle Jam on 126 after it
turned back into a civilized road. Eleni slept through the cattle jam,
having been up all night chaplaining. Here in NM, you really get to
understand the cliche, "You snooze, you lose!" Luckily for us, the road
had been recently reworked, eliminating all double-yellow-lines. John
whipped the Subaru around the cattle.

And we stopped to see and hike around Angel Rock. Eleni thinks the
rocks to the right are Trinity Rocks. As Eleni would tell you many
times if you were there, you can see the snow-capped
Rockies in the distance.

When we got there, Eleni went immediately to the kitchen! Here she is
in the kitchen, explaining how she is not
going to be cooking. We ate at
a great pizza/beer place in town instead. But she did make coffee in
the morning.

Here the Cave Man prepares for his bath. The giant jacuzzi bath under
the "waterfall." It took about a half-hour to till with that cascade
you see. Silly John thought to get in at the start and ended up
patiently watching the water inch up.

No pile of straw & bat droppings to sleep on, but a real bed with
built-in stereo. You probably can't make Fred & Wilma out on the
little dresser. But a sharp eye could see Fred Flintsone in the nicho.

A view of the back side of the cave, from the dining area into the
bedroom. It really makes one wonder why we ever moved out of caves.

This is Eleni standing on the bedroom balcony of the cave. The railing
was reinforced because that drop is even further than it looks.

This is not anyplace special, but the colors and shapes were too
interesting. The whole area around the cave was oil/gas mining, but
there was still scenery. This is NM, after all!

We pretended to be the Hoodoo Gurus.

These colorful bushes were growing on rocks everywhere. The roots just
grow along the rock until they find a little soil. I only PS'ed this a
little to get that much color. The wood was actually more purple than
it looks here.

This is Castle Rock, near Angel Rock. The Rockies got in the background
of the picture again, as Eleni would tell you again if you were there.
