Dome Lookout HIke
Created 11/11/10
October 23 we finally visited Dome Lookout, walking from the turn-off
from the "main" road.

It was a partially sunny fall day. Lucky for the dog, it was a bit cool
most of the time. As usual, John wore his kilt. He is still not sure
why they are not more popular, especially for hiking in the mountains.

See the arrow? That is where we are headed! If I uploaded a higher
resolution picture, you could resolve the little bump on the top of the
mountain as a fire lookout tower. The colors were still nice in the
overcast.

So, why didn't Eleni mention the ominous clouds behind us? Here it got
sunny and warm as we started up the slope of the mountain. Arkoutha is
not dragging yet. And we are
dry.

As we climbed, we encountered this solid soul. He kept watch over the
area burned out by the
Dome
Fire.

The lookout has seen better days. It was vandalized and obviously
uncared for. But the view was great. If you want to see the view, you
will just have to come visit.

We ate lunch in the lee of the tower because it had become very windy and cool. And the drizzle
was moving in. The dog was so tired from the long walk and climb that
she drank a liter of water and collapsed. And we still had to walk all
the way back.
This tree had been stripped clean and wind-smoothed. But now we were
surrounded by ominous clouds! Time to scoot.

As we started down, we chased this rainbow. We thought it would be an
easy catch because it was below
us the whole time. We had not actually seen a rainbow below us before.
